Why a Provisional Patent ?
Provisional Patents
A provisional patent application allows up to one year of patent protection on your idea. This provisional patent option provides inventors the low cost option for one year to protect their idea while the inventor performs their research to determine whether they want to move forward with their invention or not. Before that one year is up you must file for a non provisional patent or lose the provisional patent starting date protection.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office has set up the provisional patent application to create an early low cost beginning filing date for the long term non provisional patent application.
Non provisional patents may include; utility patents, deign patents and plant patents.
Provisional Patents are a low cost and important first step in the patent protection application process.

Please keep in mind that after 2013 the person who files first usually receives the patent protection and not necessarily the person who invents. So, if you have an idea it is important to at least file the low cost one year provisional patent to start receiving patent protection.
